Super structures

An exhibition about some of the world’s outstanding structures will be opened by Mark Oaten MP at INTECH Science Centre on 4th June to mark the centenary of the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE). Using a variety of media – models, video, photographs - this exhibition brings to life the design and construction of iconic structures in Britain and the world. The exhibition will be open from 3rd – 29nd June and included in the normal admission to INTECH.

The exhibition will feature a mechanical model of the award winning Gateshead Millenium bridge, models of the proposed Twin Sails bridge (Poole), London Bridge Tower (Shard of Glass) also the new Halley VI Antarctic base station (a movable building). Dramatic videos will depict the effect of earthquakes on buildings, the collapse of the TacomaNarrowsBridge, also demolition and reconstruction of a city building. Further panels will explain the role of structural engineering over the last 100 years including original drawings of the Empire State Building and graphics from the tallest structure in the world, Burj Dubai. The exhibition was created by the Southern Branch of the IStructE led by Chairman Paul Bracey.
